Profile of Mr. Mohamed Amjad
Mohamed
Amjad started his career in the hospitality industry as a teenager
in the 70s. In 1985, he was awarded a Commonwealth scholarship
to Cyprus and underwent a two year Diploma course
in food production (Hotel and Catering Institute). In
1989, he was awarded a Swiss Government scholarship and completed
a three year Hotel Management course in Switzerland (IHTTI
Hotel Management Institute). He also holds a Masters Degree
in Hospitality Management (Birmingham University).
Amjad attended various courses in Training Methodology locally
and internationally. He has a vast experience in the industry
in Maldives and Europe. Among positions he held in hotels in
Europe and Maldives are the position of Manager and General Manager.
After completing his studies abroad, he continued as a lecturer
at the Hotel School in Male and was promoted to the position of
Assistant Director when the school became an Institute and remained
in at these positions even after it was named Faculty of Hospitality
and Tourism under Maldives College of Higher Education. He resigned
in 2002 after 12 years of service.
In 1995, he took a no-pay leave to join a 3 year Human Resource
Development Project as Training Specialist. This project, aimed
at producing trainers for the Hospitality Industry of the seven
countries of South Asian Regional Cooperation, was funded by the
European Union to the tune of US$ 10 million.
At the request of The Ministry of Tourism, he developed the initial
criteria and testing of the Presidential Human Resource Award for
the tourism industry.
He was also actively involved in the initial
testing and implementation. Amjad was also a member of the Tourism
Promotion Council at the Maldives Tourism Promotion Board as an
Industry expert until 2008.
In 2006, Amjad undertook a project for the Ministry of Tourism
and Civil Aviation to develop Human Resource Development strategies
and action plans for the Third Tourism Master plan of Maldives.
He was also a training consultant for the Vila Hotels and Wings
Services Pvt. Ltd. in Male and a panel member of the Vila Scholarship
Foundation for 2006 and 2007.
During and after his study in Europe, he traveled to well over
25 countries in Europe, Middle East, Gulf, Asia and South Pacific.
Currently, Mr. Amjad is Operations Director of Beehive Hotels
of which he is also a shareholder. Beehive Hotels operates the
42 room Nalahiya Hotel in Male.
Amjad became increasingly vocal in domestic politics after he
was imprisoned in connection with the popular SANDAAN email news
letter. Now he is a supporter of all reform activities and intends
to run for Citizens Majilis to represent Fedu, Addu Atoll.
